Havens
at Douglas Udell Gallery
November 23rd- December 7th, 2013 - Vancouver Gallery

Douglas Udell Gallery presents "Havens", new acrylic resin-based work by Halifax-based artist Jessica Korderas. Korderas' three-dimensional works often take inspiration from cinema, symbolic and illustrative figurative painting. In "Havens", Korderas explores the cathartic effects of solitude; intricately painted illusory scenes are embedded between layers of resin, trapping light and giving the effect of movement when viewed from varied angles.

Opening reception: Saturday, November 23rd from 2-4 pm.
Exhibition runs from November 9th- December 7th.

The Painting Project

at Galerie l'UQAM, May 1 - June 1, 2013

The Painting Project proposes to delineate the practice of painting in Canada for a wide audience, based on exhaustive research in a didactic register and with a selection of 60 works by as many artists. The ambition of this initiative is to provide a broader view of painting in Canada by founding a "panorama in the making", according to 4 sections: the figure of reality, emanating from the procedures of figuration, in line with the great painting traditions; fictional worlds, arising from figurative undertakings with content that is either symbolic—inspired by cartoons, comic strips, graphic novels, the media or commercial illustration—or 100 per cent computer-based; painting as the subject, where, by means of quotation, gesture and abstraction, "how to paint" becomes the subject matter; and, finally, hybrid practices, in which painting develops in osmosis with other art disciplines to produce object-paintings, writing-paintings and photograph-paintings.

Illusive Reality

at Gallery Page & Strange, October 5 - 26, 2012

I have always been heavily influenced by movies in my work. Like any other art form, movies have the ability to both represent and mold society. Exposure to films is so common, such an ordinary part of people's lives that their true effect can easily be forgotten. By subtly suggesting cinematic sensibilities in a sculptural form, I want people to consider the impact of films on their own perspectives of the world, away from the overpowering influence of the medium itself. Resin is perfectly suited to represent film. It creates a level of distortion that gives the illusion of movement between the layers when viewed from different angles. It also traps light, filling the pieces with an illumination that emulates the glow of the silver screen. Through this new body of work, I created resin based pieces that explore whether movies are reflective of society, whether they shape it, or both, and to what extent.

Opening reception October 5 from 6-8pm.

Spaces take many forms, among them physical, psychological, negative, allegorical, and pictorial. Even these distinctions shift borders and meld. It is from these movements between past and present, form and function, the tactile and the remembered, that the geographies of the everyday emerge.

Isolation

at Gallery Page & Strange, April 16 - 30, 2010

installation isolation

Not long ago I moved to Halifax, and this was the first time in my life that I had experienced living in a city. The strangest change that came from this move was the feeling of isolation, though from day to day I was surrounded by more people than at any other time in my life. The cliché ‘alone in the crowd’ kept coming back to me again and again. The work in this exhibition deals with alienation, social anxiety, and loneliness, even in the midst of many people.
The first body of work deals with this directly, depicting common social events but with an underlying sense of separation and sometimes even hostility. I tried to include at least one figure that was overtly secluded from the crowd. In these pieces the way that the figures play off of one another was very important to me. I like the way layering resin was able to physically remove them from one another, and at the same time freeze them permanently in their positions, with no chance of movement.
In the ‘Isolated Thoughts’ buildings I wanted to push my interest in the physical divide of an apartment building to a more surreal level. I feel like when you are inside a building, you don’t think about the structure as a whole, and it is very easy to forget that you are actually surrounded by people. Everyone is cut off in their own little world, unaware of what can be happening just behind their walls. I chose to make cross sections of buildings full of random things that came to mind to emphasize the sometimes extreme situations that can be right next door to each other.
